In early February, the adorable 6-month-old Golden Retriever pup became an internet celebrity after being fitted with doggie braces at Harborfront Hospital for Animals in Michigan.
Owner Molly Moore told ABC News, “He wasn’t able to fully close his mouth and chew well and he stopped playing with his toys because of the pain and started losing weight because he couldn’t eat.”
Her father, Dr. James Moore, who owns Harborfront Hospital for Animals, posted pictures of Wesley on the Hospital’s Facebook page.
“February is National Pet Dental Health month, so we thought this was a good time to let you know about the importance of your best buddy’s dental health,” the veterinary clinic captioned the post, which was shared more than 270,000 times before it was removed.
In response to Wesley’s viral photo, a spokeswoman for the American Veterinary Medical Association took the opportunity to remind the public about the importance of dental health for domestic animals.
“Veterinary dentistry includes the cleaning, adjustment, filing, extraction, repair, and overall oral care,” the spokeswoman told ABC.
Checking your pet’s teeth regularly can help to avoid serious health issues, like weight loss, gum disease, and heart disease.
“I think the only way he realizes anything is different is because we had to take his toys away so he doesn’t pull the braces off,” Moore said. “He’s still as puppy-ish as ever.”
Wesley’s braces were removed in early March. We can’t wait to see the ‘after’ pictures!
